We have all heard this aphorism, and it has reached that level of discourse because it contains a fair amount of truth in its simplicity. Growth is what we all want when we start our own firms. We grow by starting small and then taking on more challenges, staff, and clients. We grow through trial and error. But, sometimes our errors are hard to overcome or become structural elements that are hard to fix without external perspectives.
There are many stages of development for any firm. Creative firms must manage not only the high-caliber output for their clients but also how they leverage their team through that initial growth, into a sustainable business model while keeping their culture intact. It is not uncommon for sustained growth to require some perspective adjustments that are not obvious to the founders.
